It’s that age-old question. What makes a good player great?
I have pondered this question a few times recently.
One was following the win of a 16-year-old in my local club’s senior championship. It was the third time a 16-year-old had won the club’s main championship and it’s hard not to ask yourself: How far will this lad go?
Last month I enjoyed attending the New Zealand Professional Golfers’ Association (NZPGA) trainee graduation day at Gulf Harbour in north Auckland.
The purpose of this day is to celebrate the trainees completing their three years of education and graduating as full members of the NZPGA.

As we all know, the time it takes to play a round of golf is cited as one of the main reasons the game is suffering from declining membership and participation.
The most common solution is to suggest a move to nine (or even six) hole golf. That does have its place -– for example twilight tournaments –- but most golf club members would state a preference for the traditional 18 holes, whilst at the same time complaining about how long it takes to play at their own club.

Recently I had the privilege to be part of an announcement where it was confirmed New Zealand is to host one of the world’s most prestigious amateur golf tournaments. The Royal Wellington Golf Club has been awarded the Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship which will be held from October 26-29 in 2017.
